Deirdre of the Sorrows. Oil on canvas 38" x 38" or 97 cm x 97 cm

The beautiful Deirdre was betrothed to the aged King Conor. From her infancy, she was kept secluded. One day she saw Naoise (one of the sons of Uisneach) playing his harp. She fell in love with him. She plucked a wild rose and flung it at the handsome warrior, thereby putting a geis on him. Henceforth, he was honor bound to marry Deirdre. King Conor hounded the pair. They fled to Scotland but were lured back to Ireland on false promises. Ultimately, all the sons of Uisneach and the Red Branch were killed battling Conor's forces. Deirdre mourned her husband for the rest of her life.
